Research Paper According to statistics, there are 2.07 billion users on Facebook, 330 million users on Twitter, and 800 million users on Instagram. There are approximately 7.6 billion people on planet Earth, which means that nearly half of Earth’s inhabitants are active users of social media. Social media continues to be on the rise in modern day society. People are connected all day and every day at work, school, home, etc. We feel it is required and necessary to be connected through social media. As social media continues to grow, so does the desire to be connected. Users of social media are under the false impression that their safety and privacy is ensured. Another similar social media website, Twitter, also allows its users access to other users’ profiles. On Twitter, users can follow other users-which allows them to view others’ tweets or updates. Typically, when someone tweets, they mention what they are doing, where they are, or what is on their mind. Twitter enables people to track the lives of those who they follow. The other most popular social media website, Instagram, differs from Facebook and Twitter. Instead of focusing on more written posts, Instagram’s main emphasis is pictures. In the article, â€Å"Social Media and Our Misconception on the Realities† by Richard Savenero Jr., he refers to Instagram as, â€Å"an online photo sharing and social networking service that enables users to take pictures, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as media sites including Facebook or Twitter† (Savenero 92). These social media websites oblige you to provide your personal information in order to belong to one of these sites. If you do not provide the required info rmation, then you are not allowed to be a member of the site. Since most people find it more important to be accepted by social media, they are willing to surrender their personal information.
