Friendship and its Effects on the Human Person: Friendship is something that everyone has experienced to some extent and is important to our development of a wholesome person. Being able to relate to another person and react accordingly strengthens our emotional intelligence and makes us a more well-rounded individual. This is an extremely important topic to me as a college student because I need to know how to handle different kinds of relationships as I meet and work with new people. In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics: Book IX, Aristotle gives thought to the ideology of friendship. He gives insight into what makes a friendship what it is, why friends break up, and the importance of goodwill in a friendship. By doing this, you will â€Å"continuously accumulate merit† which is â€Å"the main cause of success in all our activitie s (Gyatso 55). Aristotle’s response to this question is different than Gyatso’s because Aristotle believes that man â€Å"is his own best friend and therefore ought to love himself best† (Aristotle para. 27). His view is that we must love ourselves first, whereas Gyatso says that we must cherish others first. I find this Aristotle’s response easier to relate to because it is rare that I cherish someone else more than myself unless it is my family. I believe that we should take care of ourselves first and this, in the end, will benefit the ones around us because we will be the best version of ourselves. I think that if we do not love ourselves most, it will be difficult to increase our love for others. Loving yourself most is different from selfishness because one can still be sympathetic to others even if they prioritize self-love over loving others more. This idea of if we should love others or ourselves more helps us figure out where we want to place our importance in our eyes, in comparison to others. Another point that I found particularly interesting is how we define friendship. What is a friend? Aristotle gives several definitions that describe this type of relationship.
